City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra ClareAfter returning to New York, Clary and Jace thought life would return to normal, they could date, Clary could train and Jocelyn and Luke would finally get married. But Jace starts having dreams where he kills Clary, in other news another demon child like Sebastian is found, all these smallВPsnippetsВPof information lead to the ultimate battle with one of the original demons, a huge trial for everyone involved. I couldn’t really get into this book as much as the previous three, it just seems to be the same battle, although the new character of Kyle/Jordan was a worthwhile addition. It had the same tense and mysterious writing style that I really enjoy, but the plot was no longer original, the characters were facing similar difficulties to those that they already faced, although with a slightly new perspective. Still a great addition to the series, 2.5 stars :)
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa DiffenbaughThisВPtantalisingВPtale that follows the life of Victoria, an eighteen year old who wasВPabandonedВPat birth and raised in series of group homes. Told in two time periods, chapter-by-chapter, the flashback scenes to when Victoria was nine and living with Elizabeth, her last chance at an adoption. The book follows Victoria as she comes to term with her less-than-perfect past, meets some oldВPacquaintances, and communicates in the language of flowers. This book flows really well, never over-powering the reader with too much information or leaving them bored. I liked the balance between each version of Victoria, as it was told in two parts you could clearly see the development of Victoria and how much she’s grown up. The inclusion of the real Victorian Language of Flowers was a real eye-opener for me and one that I feel could encourage a lot of people to find this dying language, it was alsoВPintegratedВPinto the story well, not an outside concept that felt like an intrusion. A truly beautiful book, with an everlasting story, 4.5 stars :)
A short story that merged two very excellently written worlds. The spying world of the Gallagher Girls series and the thieving world of the Heist Society series. Hale and Macey met a posh society dinner, after following the signs they both figured out that they were about to be taken hostage moments before it happened. With a little cooperation and a useful comms unit linking them to the outside world of Kat Bishop and Abby Morgan, they manage to save the day, just about. WhatвІЂЂЂs so great about Double Crossed is that the main characters in this werenвІЂЂЂt the main characters in their traditional series, they were pretty big just not the protagonists, it was also written very well, flowed really well and was an amazing storyline. I really loved this short story and it was just what I needed to make me re-fall-in-love with both of these awesome series. This story is also free to read online so click here, even if you havenвІЂЂЂt read either series, itвІЂЂЂs a fun way to spend a little time, 5 stars :)
Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret StohlA damn good start to any series, this book blew me off my feet, I was not expecting such an amazing combination of characters, supernatural, plot twists and setting. To me, it was phenomenal. Lena Duchannes moved to the small town of Gatlin, where new people weren’t welcome, particularly the orphaned niece of the town weirdo. She soon befriended Ethan Wate, with the discovery of their mutual dreams and mind-communication, they grew close and Lena confessed her secrets, the ones binding her to the countdown on her hand and the lead up to her sixteenth birthday, dark or light? This is a story that doesn’t revolve around love, but the meaning it can bring to two people. What’s great about this book is it’s mystery, how you are slowly introduced to this deceiving world but are never truly included. As it’s from the view of Ethan, you are able to see the understanding of his view and the expectation that everything will be okay. I thought the book was paced really well, it flowed nicely and never seemed to skim over the small details or just focus on the big main events. The use of the song, Sixteen Moons, throughout the story created this continuous melody that linked these authentically real characters back to their supernatural roots. A brilliant start to a mystical series, that has just the right amount of magic to be supernatural but not encompassed and surrounded by this, 4 stars :)
